Why should I participate in a group?

Groups have been shown, for the right set of people, to be the most effective way to improve the quality of emotional and relational life, as well as gain important information. We all live and work in social systems (groups of relationships), and the more we understand ourselves in these relational systems, the more empowered we become to effect success, happiness, and contentment.

What are the settings for these Group Sessions?

  • Our Cincinnati offices: 11497 Springfield Pike, in Springdale.
  • Your Worksite or Church location.
  • Our 265 acre field education and training center, Luna Sol in Kentucky.
  • Your offsite location.

What types of groups do you offer?

We offer therapy groups, educational and training experiences, process groups, and Gestalt-oriented experiential groups. These groups are offered at various times throughout the year. Check this site often for updates.

I. Therapy Groups

These groups can be used as an adjunct to individual therapy or as one’s only therapy experience. They can be time limited (4- 12 weeks) or on-going. Some groups are topical or issue oriented (like depression or relationships) while others are process oriented. These process groups offer an intensive opportunity to refine interpersonal skills and develop heightened self-awareness through safe, but deeply honest feedback from others in the group. In group, the psychologist develops a safe, therapeutic environment, where honest interaction is possible. This atmosphere is created by careful attention to the verbal and non-verbal behaviors and dynamics manifested by the participants. This therapeutic environment allows participants the chance to delve deeply below the surface, rather than continue to exist within society’s disconnecting limitations. Frank, sensitive and genuine interaction is the result. These groups offer rewarding emotional experiences and teach participants new patterns of relating, correcting longstanding misperceptions of oneself and fears of other people. All psychologists at FSC have completed Process Groups as a participant prior to leading such groups. Therefore, the leader is sensitive to the participants’ experience of group process, as well as having been highly trained to lead groups.

For referring professionals
The process for referring your patient into a group is straight-forward. Either call our office directly or have your patient call. We will ensure all releases are completed and, with the patient’s authorization, establish a system of coordinating treatment (if you are working with the patient in individual treatment) or arrange for any treatment communications.

II. Experiential Groups

Direct experience is often the best way to learn. Our system of Experiential Groups offer a dynamic, memorable experience which creates a “deep learning” for participants. With these learnings, participants can break artificial binds that have been limiting and compromising their lives. A new sense of enjoyment, satisfaction and success are thus allowed to surface.

III. Training Groups
Staff training is crucial to effective provision of care and service. Groups of people who work or volunteer together on a common care giving problem or project, (teachers, nursing home or children’s home residential staff, half-way house staff, etc.) often appreciate learning how to increase their effectiveness with training from a helping professional. Our Training Groups are focused on the communication feature of relationships.

Communication is the sending and receiving of meanings, that is, meaningful messages. We typically communicate from a habitual pattern. At times, our habits are very effective, at other times less so. All behavior in the presence of another person is communication because it sends messages. By becoming more aware of one’s interpersonal style of communication, and learning new ways to decode other people’s communication, caregivers can become more effective. This is the area where our training groups can help equip you or your cadre of caregivers and service providers.
