Why Spirituality?

Spirituality:  A Matter of the Heart
by Margaret Josephson Rinck, ED.D.

As an ordained Christian clergy as well as a psychologist, I often hear questions like the following: "What good does it do to become a more spiritually alive person?   I mean, for now, for life here, for everyday life?  Oh sure, heaven is nice to look forward to, but when the rubber meets the road in your life, what good is the hope of heaven?  Who cares what will happen later if the NOW is so painful I can’t bear it?"

Do you ever find yourself asking that question?  Some people claim that the Christian life is a love affair of the heart.  Does it seem that way to you?   Or does it seem more duty and obligation where busyness is substituted for meaning; "have to’s are more important than desires; where intimacy, love, and deepening relationships are replaced by functionality of relationship ("You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours").  Do you find your Christian experience more about time management than mystery?  More about activity for God than communication with God?

If so, you may find that Christian counseling is for you.  Our desire for all who come for counseling here is that as we explore together the uncovering of the inner life of our hearts, may we find ourselves strangely encouraged, finding hope where we thought there was only despair.  One way to do that is to explore the meaning of relationship to God, self and others.
